Dealing With Difficult People In The Work Place

I was reading an article about dealing with difficult employees in the workplace. The author provided some sound advice in dealing with the situation, but, I couldn’t help but wonder how what they were saying would work in a small to midsize company. First, allow me to provide my definition of a small to medium-sized company. A small business is one that is incorporated by the state, but, has about a 10 – 50 employees. The emphasis is more toward the 10 to 20 number. Think of small Architectural & Design firms, or Design & Build Construction companies.

Then there is the issue of taking HR concepts and solutions designed for the large corporations and trying to find a way to reformat them to fit into a smaller environment. The type of situation presented in the article I read was set in the context of one of those large firms where you have a department that is the size of what I describe as a small company.

Let’s consider the situation of dealing with a difficult employee in a small firm. More often than not, the in small business the employee who is hard to work with is in some way related to the owner of the company or even the owner. Now, the question is what the most efficient way of handling their occasional outbursts or continuous disruptive behavior is?

In my experience, I found disruptive owners are often at odds with themselves. They have a vision and concept in mind of how they want things done and get frustrated when everyone doesn’t seem to be on the same page. Frankly, it will take a strong person to push back on the owner to get her to slow the pace down and think about what she is doing. For this to happen, one has to have a rapport with the proprietor and comfort level that will allow them to call the owner out. Admittedly, this will require lots of courage and strong belief you can find another job, as, you do risk being let go. But, most competent people have a bit of a little streak and will back off when presented with a cogent set of facts as to what they are doing wrong.
